    Dear Debbie,

I am getting ready to put up a three rail 5.25" Flex-Fence. I also purchased electric coated wire. I bought enough to run two strands of wire. Where should I run the coated wire? Do I need two rounds of wire or would just one do the job? Should I run the wire as my first rail? I want to be sure the horses don't chew on the Flex. Please give me your suggestions for installation.

    Dear Debbie,

We are trying to get some fencing for our paddocks, and we have looked at several options. One option was cedar spit rail. We questioned whether this would be okay for horses, but I have gotten mixed answers. I came across your name while searching for information and thought you might have an opinion. Any help is appreciated.

    Dear Debbie,

I very much like the look of the PVC white fencing but I am wondering how to keep them clean. Our neighbors fenced their 15 acres with PVC fencing and now 3 years later it has algae or some other green growth over most of it. Before we fence our 25 acres, I would like to know if there is a practical way to clean the fence. Our neighbors have had to resort to 'hand washing' theirs, as a power washer did not work; the green stuff comes right off, but you have to rub it off, not spray it off. Hope you know of an easier way or of some product that once applied would keep the algae from growing on the fencing. We love the look of white PVC fencing and would like to use it as our perimeter fence if (and its a big IF) you know of a practical way to keep it looking bright and white.

    Dear Debbie,

My questions are regarding the electric tape fence. I am part of a neighborhood stable and we currently have 17 paddocks on roughly 4 acres. It's all post and board. There is so much activity over the fences between horses and boards are always getting broken and coming down. I would like to install the electric tape over the top rail all around the perimeter of the fences. The problem I'm having is getting people who know nothing about a stable or horses to approve this. Their primary concern is liability and lawsuits. What if someone passing by comes in contact with the tape? What is the worse case scenario? There are a lot of children that come through the stables. If you can give me any info that would convince these people that it's a safe product, I would appreciate it.

    Dear Debbie,

I have a horse that is from paint stock, he has blue eyes. My brother-in-law says that horses with blue eyes can only see shadows. Is this true?

    Dear Debbie,

I am getting ready to build a barn; I seem to be having a hard time finding an answer on what type bedding to use for the stall. Concrete with rubber mats and shavings, clay floor with mats and shavings? Do we put drains in either of those choices? What is best for the horse?

    Dear Debbie,

Maybe you can help me with this question. Recently, I put in the barn shell and am working on the interior. I'm having difficulty deciding where to put the steps/stairs to the hayloft. Regular steps on the tack/office space or steps straight up from the aisle? Is it harder to put things in the upper level without steps straight up? But steps can take up a lot of room in the office space. Do you have any suggestions?

    Dear Debbie,

I'd like a PVC fence, but don't want the white or black. Would prefer a brown fence around the perimeter of our property, but will use no climb fencing with a natural/brown top rail. Where can I get brown PVC fence rails & posts? Any suggestions, as we're going to start putting in our fencing at our new place soon....I hope. I have wooden split rails at my current home and love their natural look as they age and blend with the trees etc., but those posts needed replacement on many after 15 years. Hoping the brown PVC will avoid that maintenance. Any suggestions appreciated.

    Dear Debbie,

I have a problem with my two horses in their stalls. They like to walk around all the time. They are out most of the day and are in at night. I pick their stalls twice a day and it is very frustrating when I have to completely pick the stalls each time. I have balls in their stalls to try and keep them busy, but this doesn't seem to be working. What can I do?

    Dear Debbie,

I am a county humane officer, and lately we have had a horrible week; two separate barns, both in the worst conditions you can imagine. Do you have any more articles on this (stall cleanliness) as well as the problems (that occur) if you do not keep things clean? I need this for the legal aspects and to educate people about this very type of thing. Especially the prosecutors I work with that are not horse people to begin with; this will be a very big help to me. I just had one barn with 36 horses, very bad inside and out. The stalls had puddles of urine in them with babies standing in this disgusting waste and they were not being fed properly either. We had a vet out and he noted all 11 mares were graded a 4 or less on the Henneke Body scoring chart. Sad isn’t it, but true. That is why I need all the articles you can think of to help me. The prosecutors need information and these articles are my best tools to prove my point. If there is anything else you have written about I would really appreciate you sending them to me.
