Can I use flex rail fencing to attach to railroad ties to make a round pen?
Hi Juliana -
Thank you for such a good question. Flex rail fencing can be used to make wonderful round pens. What I’m questioning and not sure about are the railroad ties. With any flexible fence rail, the posts must be concreted 4' into the ground. It is recommended to use 6" x 9' pressure treated posts also. If you don't have enough of the post in the ground or proper concreting, your round pen will not hold up; it would be the fault of the bracing and not the rail. I'm not sure what kind of railroad posts you have or their length, but most of the time they are no longer than four or five feet. I would recommend the 6” x 9’ pressure treated posts set 8' apart. That way you will truly be happy with a long lasting round pen that will do the job that you want it to do. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I'm so glad that you asked now before you installed your round pen! Good job!
