Little Bitsy Farm

Dear Debbie,

I am going to fence in 8 acres for my 4 horses. I am thinking of using 4 strands of RAMM coated electric fencing. I wanted to go with the cheapest way but also while keeping my horses safe. I don't foresee them hanging on the fencing with 8 lush acres for 4 small horses. Do you think this is the right choice and how far should I space the fence poles?

Little Bitsy Farm -

Hello and thank you for your very good question. Its just a thought, but if you would like to cut down your costs a bit more, you could use 2 strands of coated wire and 2 strands of electric coated wire. I don’t know your horses, however, you may have a good feel for this. I think the 2 hot wires would keep your horses away from the fence. However, the safer way would be 4 strands of electric. We recommend 12' post spacing on any horse fencing. Again, if you feel that you can go further, you could go up to 15' spans. We know that the further your span your posts, the easier it its to push rails apart. Since you are using electric and your horses respect it, the further post spacing may work for you. Thank you for asking how to fence properly! You can change your ideas now before you fence. And it’s so good to get knowledgeable information first. Good job! If you have any further questions, feel free to email me.

- Debbie
